GLS Portugal has launched a pioneering initiative in the logistics sector, partnering with several Volunteer Fire Brigade Humanitarian Associations to install lockers (smart parcel lockers) at fire stations, creating a new source of income for these institutions.
The initiative stems from a strategic vision at GLS Portugal that goes beyond the expansion of its Out-of-Home (OOH) network, combining logistical convenience with social impact.
“We wanted to turn a logistical waypoint into a point of social support, where the convenience of collecting a parcel translates into direct help for those who protect us”, explains Bruno Pedro, OOH Network Development Lead at GLS Portugal.
A solution with real impact
The lockers installed at the fire stations allow the firefighters to generate passive income through the leasing of space, contributing directly to the financial sustainability of these associations, which depend largely on external funding.
“This initiative represents significant support for the sustainability of our corporation, allowing us to strengthen our response capacity and to continue serving the population with adequate resources”, highlights the Commander of the Famalicão Fire Brigade.
At the same time, consumers benefit from secure, central and easily accessible collection points, reinforcing the efficiency and proximity of the GLS network.
Logistics with purpose
For GLS Portugal, this partnership represents a twofold commitment: improving the customer experience and creating value for the community.
“Within the OOH department, we do not look solely at the number of lockers installed, but at the ecosystem we are building around them”, notes Bruno Pedro.
More than a logistical solution, this is an approach that integrates social responsibility into the company's growth strategy.
A pioneering model in Portugal
The initiative stands out as a first of its kind approach in the national market, positioning fire stations as key proximity points within the logistics network, with direct social impact.
“More than a commercial transaction, this is a gesture of corporate citizenship. Supporting the firefighters means supporting the safety and well being of all Portuguese citizens”, he adds.
Expansion under way
With several projects already in place, namely at the fire stations of Famalicão, Mira and Coimbra, and new requests in development, GLS Portugal intends to extend this network to additional fire stations across the country, reinforcing its commitment to innovative and socially responsible logistics solutions.
