GLS Expands Its Benavente Facility to Strengthen Its Logistics Network in Northwestern Spain

Zamora, June 3, 2026 – GLS Spain continues to optimize its operational network through the expansion of its logistics facility in the Centro de Transportes Industrial Estate in Benavente. This strategic investment further reinforces Benavente’s position as one of the main logistics hubs in northwestern Spain, with direct access to the A-6 motorway.

With this expansion, the facility will reach a total surface area of 5,300 m² and will incorporate an automated sorting system in the coming months. Thanks to this technological enhancement, processing capacity will increase to up to 11,000 parcels per hour, significantly improving operational efficiency and reducing delivery times across the region.

To achieve specific operational efficiency milestones while ensuring service continuity, the project has been structured into two distinct phases. Both phases have been executed while the facility remains fully operational, requiring a high level of coordination, prior negotiation, and technical planning from all teams involved.

A Two-Phase Project to Ensure Service Continuity and Scale Capacity

The first phase, designed to ensure readiness for the 2025 Black Friday and Christmas peak season, included the construction of new loading docks, door modifications, equipment upgrades, access improvements, the implementation of a video surveillance system, and telecommunications enhancements. This phase also involved the construction of new office spaces to replace temporary facilities, as well as the installation of a transformer substation to increase the electrical power available at the site.

The second phase, currently underway, includes the deployment of the automated sorting system. Following a detailed planning process to ensure compatibility between the technological rollout and daily operations, GLS Spain will carry out final testing during September, with the objective of having the facility fully prepared for the high-demand months of 2026.

Once completed, the facility will feature an advanced automated sorting system and two induction lines, enabling GLS to scale operations and respond more efficiently to peak demand periods, with the goal of being fully prepared for this year’s Black Friday and Christmas campaigns. The sorting system will include 10 double automatic chutes, 8 bulk loading positions and 3 bulk feeding positions, together with 7 unloading van positions, 2 loading van positions, and up to 37 trailer bays.

"The expansion of our Benavente facility underscores our commitment to delivering agile, innovative and efficient logistics services while strengthening nationwide connectivity from a strategically located hub. We are investing in future-ready facilities equipped with cutting-edge technology and designed to provide a working environment that supports employee well-being," said Daniel Arjones, North-West Division Manager at GLS Spain.

Efficiency and Employee Well-being at the Core of the Project

GLS’s environmental commitment is reflected in the installation of two 100 kW electric charging points and three 22 kW charging points for electric vehicles, supporting the transition towards electric fleets. The building will also be equipped with intelligent lighting and signaling systems to optimize logistics processes and enhance safety.

The expansion not only delivers operational improvements but also represents a significant investment in employee well-being. New 180 m² office spaces, a staff canteen, medical room, showers, booths, and adapted facilities are being developed for both office and warehouse employees. All sectional doors are motorized and equipped with traffic lights and dedicated lighting systems for trailer maneuvering, further improving safety and operational efficiency.

"Through this strategic investment, GLS Spain reinforces its commitment to service excellence and operational efficiency in a highly complex project that is being delivered without interrupting daily operations, thanks to the coordinated efforts of our teams over recent months," concluded Daniel Arjones.
