Madrid, 9 March 2026 – GLS Spain and Metro de Madrid are advancing the transformation of urban logistics in the Spanish capital with a new agreement to install smart lockers in the 19 stations of Line 3. The initiative will allow the collection and sending of parcels to be integrated into the daily journeys of millions of metro users, promoting a more efficient and sustainable distribution model in the city.
The rollout will cover the entire Line 3 corridor, connecting El Casar, in Getafe, with Moncloa, and passing through some of Madrid’s main urban hubs such as Embajadores, Lavapiés, Sol, Callao and Plaza de España. Through this initiative, GLS Spain continues expanding its Out-of-Home (OOH) network, one of the main drivers of growth in the logistics sector, strengthening its infrastructure with more than 500 lockers or smart parcel lockers operating in Spain, integrated within its network of more than 10,000 GLS Points. These new lockers incorporate a specific design inspired by iconic elements of Madrid’s skyline, visually integrating them into the city’s urban environment.
The incorporation of smart lockers in Metro stations facilitates a new way of accessing logistics services by integrating parcel distribution into citizens’ everyday mobility. This model makes it possible to concentrate deliveries at strategic high-traffic locations, helping to reduce surface delivery journeys and improving the efficiency of the urban logistics system.
From an operational perspective, GLS Spain prepares the shipments destined for this locker network at its Madrid Km0 logistics hub, where the parcels are consolidated. Metro de Madrid collects the parcels daily at these facilities and integrates them into its network. These supply operations have been designed to be fully compatible with railway activity, ensuring that logistics operations do not interfere with passenger service or train frequency. Finally, shipments are distributed among the Line 3 stations, where they are deposited in the lockers, making use of the existing infrastructure to achieve a more efficient and sustainable last mile.
The project forms part of Metro de Madrid’s strategy to transform its network into a next-generation service space for citizens. In this context, GLS Spain participates with the installation of automated lockers that facilitate urban logistics and parcel collection in an environment where solutions from other operators such as Amazon or SEUR are also present.
A project that expands the collaboration initiated on Line 12
The deployment on Line 3 represents a new step in the collaboration between GLS Spain and Metro de Madrid to develop innovative urban logistics solutions. This initiative adds to the project launched on Line 12 (MetroSur), where both companies use the metro infrastructure for parcel transport.
This service allows shipments to be transported from different GLS Spain agencies located in stations across the network to the Loranca depot, through trains operating during off-peak passenger demand hours, ensuring full compatibility with the public transport service.
The combination of rail-based parcel transport, urban microhubs and smart lockers enables progress towards a multimodal logistics system that integrates the mobility of people and goods within the same infrastructure. This model contributes to reducing urban traffic congestion and the carbon footprint associated with last-mile distribution.
Through partnerships such as this, GLS Spain reinforces its commitment to innovation in the logistics sector and to the development of solutions that integrate mobility, technology and sustainability, responding to the growth of e-commerce and the new needs of urban distribution.
