Madrid, November 26, 2025 – A new study by GLS Spain on perceptions of out-of-home (Out Of Home) deliveries confirms the upward trend in recipients’ habits when it comes to collecting parcels outside the home in Spain. The report reveals that 64% of the Spanish population engaged in e-commerce has already used a convenience point or a smart locker, consolidating this collection model as a growing alternative to traditional home delivery.
Frequency also plays a key role: almost half of Spaniards receive parcels several times a month, and one in three uses collection points or lockers at least once or twice a month, highlighting increasingly frequent and normalised usage.
Proximity, opening hours and speed as drivers of change
The reasons behind the growing popularity of out-of-home collection are linked to the wide range of flexible delivery solutions available to users, adapted to their lifestyles. Seven out of ten Spaniards value proximity (70.3%) and extended opening hours (69.6%) as essential aspects of the collection experience. The absence of queues or waiting times (57.4%) completes the ranking of the most appreciated factors.
Convenience points stand out for offering personalised service (36.6%), the security of physical retail locations (32.5%) and extended business hours (32.4%), while smart lockers are gaining ground thanks to their 24/7 availability (53.2%), absence of waiting times (47.2%) and speed (44.8%).
“Spanish consumers are increasingly seeking flexibility, convenience and options that fit into their daily lives. The move towards collection points responds to this demand and also helps to boost local commerce while moving towards a more efficient logistics model,” says Juan Sandes, Senior Manager Strategy, Out Of Home and Fulfilment at GLS Spain.
A positive impact on local businesses continues to grow
Collection at local shops not only provides convenience for users, but also directly benefits the local commercial environment. According to the study, 86% of Spaniards believe this model has a positive impact on local retail.
The most frequently mentioned effects include: increased visibility for local shops (45.8%), higher sales (32.8%) and increased footfall (29.4%).
In addition, 54.4% of users say they have purchased a product while collecting a parcel, thereby contributing to the dynamisation of these businesses.
Aragón, Madrid and the Basque Country lead in the use of convenience points
The study identifies significant regional differences. Aragón (40%), Madrid (37.3%) and the Basque Country (35.2%) are the regions where the highest proportion of the population has used a convenience point, all above the national average (30.6%).
Women and young people drive the OOH model
The study reveals clear differences by segment: 69.1% of women have used alternatives to home delivery, compared to 59.5% of men. Young people aged 18 to 34 lead the combined use of convenience points and lockers (42.9%), compared to 18.5% among those over 65.
This younger, more female profile highlights a generational shift towards more flexible and autonomous delivery models.
The GLS network strengthens to support the growth of the out-of-home model
Ahead of the Christmas campaign, GLS Spain has expanded its network to 11,500 active GLS Points nationwide, with the aim of strengthening operational efficiency and offering a faster, more flexible and more convenient delivery experience.
Towards a more digital and autonomous future
Future perceptions point towards a more flexible and technologically advanced model. According to the study:
- 4 out of 10 Spaniards believe there will be more collection points and fewer home deliveries.
- 38.5% expect greater freedom of choice regarding where and when to receive a parcel.
- 1 in 3 anticipates increased use of apps, real-time tracking and artificial intelligence.
