More on freight and parcel tracking

With GLS, senders and recipients can track their parcels and freight at any time. After entering the parcel number or Track ID (shipment number for freight), detailed information appears on-screen about the shipment status and the delivery process itself. This includes the estimated delivery day and the most recently carried-out action. Freight and parcel tracking is free of charge. Anyone sending or expecting several shipments can track them all simultaneously using the online freight and parcel tracking function.

How freight and parcel tracking works in detail: Each parcel or freight shipment label includes a 2D barcode. It contains all the necessary freight and parcel data, including the parcel or freight shipment number. The code is scanned at all the main transport points and the current position and the most recently performed action is transmitted to the GLS system. This is important for the entire logistics coordination process.

GLS makes the information available via the online freight and parcel tracking function, meaning that you too can track your parcel or freight item at any time. When a parcel, for example, is loaded into a delivery vehicle, the driver scans the code on the label with the hand-held scanner. Even if the recipient is not present at the time of the delivery attempt, the scanner will still come into operation. The driver then scans the notification card, which is left behind for the recipient. All the data is collated in the GLS system. Parcel tracking is then possible using both the parcel number and the Track ID, from the notification card.
