We support emission avoidance projects

In cooperation with ClimatePartner GmbH (ClimatePartner), we as General Logistics Systems Germany GmbH & Co. OHG (GLS Germany) additionally and voluntarily compensate the amount of greenhouse gas emissions caused by the transportation of parcels, business travel and the use of buildings. Further information on offsetting emissions and our investments in climate protection projects can be found below.

What does sustainable parcel shipping mean?

Sustainable parcel shipping means that, in addition to measures to avoid and reduce greenhouse gas emissions, we as GLS Germany additionally and voluntarily compensate the amount of our greenhouse gas emissions through certified climate protection projects to avoid emissions with our partner company ClimatePartner. As GLS Germany, we compensate the amount of greenhouse gas emissions generated by the transportation of parcels, business travel and the use of buildings. In relation to our parcel shipping, we use the phrase "climate-neutral through compensation" in this context.

The climate protection projects for compensating greenhouse gas emissions, in which GLS Germany invests in cooperation with ClimatePartner, contribute to the avoidance of emissions (see project overview below). The emission avoidance of these climate protection projects results from the protection of Amazon areas in Peru and Brazil (e. g. from deforestation) and the resulting prevention of greenhouse gas emissions, as well as from the local expansion of wind and solar energy plants in India, which reduces the use of fossil energy generation plants and avoids the associated greenhouse gas emissions.
As our compensation partner, ClimatePartner acquires so-called Verified Carbon Credits on behalf of GLS Germany on the voluntary compensation market - verified emission credits that confirm that a certain amount of greenhouse gas emissions have been avoided through climate protection projects - in the amount of the greenhouse gas emissions which are emitted annually by GLS Germany and which are to be compensated. Based on these Verified Carbon Credits, ClimatePartner issues its own offsetting certificates, which confirm that the amount of greenhouse gas emissions emitted by GLS Germany has been offset.

The climate protection projects to avoid and offset greenhouse gas emissions are certified according to international standards, such as the Gold Standard (GS), developed by WWF and other environmental organizations, or the Verified Carbon Standard (VCS) in conjunction with the Climate, Community and Biodiversity Standard (CCBS), developed by the non-governmental organization VERRA. The climate protection projects supported by GLS Germany are certified according to these international standards. The VCS is a global standard for the certification of climate protection projects for the reduction and avoidance of greenhouse gas emissions. The standard promotes the transparency and credibility of climate protection projects that generate emission credits that can be traded.

The VCS can be combined with the Climate, Community and Biodiversity Standard (CCBS), which takes additional social and ecological aspects into account. The GS is another international standard for the certification of climate protection projects and is characterized by a focus on additional sustainability aspects in addition to the reduction of emissions. Climate protection projects certified in accordance with the GS make a positive contribution to sustainable development and environmental protection.
