New depot in Kalsdorf: larger and sustainable
Following an eight-month construction phase, GLS Austria is commencing operations at the largest GLS site in Styria. The environmentally friendly depot in Kalsdorf near Graz offers more space for employees and parcel handling alike.
GLS has invested some nine million euros in the depot and its state-of-the-art equipment, with the new depot replacing the old site in Unterpremstätten. The handling capacity has increased by more than 70 per cent – and now stands at up to 29,000 parcels a day. In addition, the number of bays for processing delivery vehicles has doubled to 100. There is scope for further capacity expansion to keep pace with future growth.
More capacity, more employees
The depot’s cutting-edge conveyor system boosts productivity, thus reducing working times for employees and transport partners. GLS took employee needs into account with the new site, with the spacious communal areas extremely well received among staff and delivery drivers. What’s more, 32 new jobs have been created. The new depot also boasts green elements such as a heat pump-based heating system and charging points for electric cars.
Customs certification for GLS Austria
GLS Austria is now registered with the customs authorities as an “authorised economic operator”. This means that international consignments can be handled more quickly and easily.

To obtain the certification, companies need to meet stringent security requirements. Alongside solvency, firms also have to demonstrate established processes and appropriate customs management procedures.
Speedier shipping – including to Switzerland
AEO status, and the lower risk rating that results from it, will ensure swifter customs clearance. Thanks to the simplified declaration procedure, there will be much fewer checks on goods and paperwork. This is also good news in light of the increasing number of exports to Switzerland handled by GLS Austria.

International e-commerce simplified further
Italy, Portugal, Finland and Bulgaria have recently been added to the international FlexDeliveryService. The number of countries connected across borders via the service thus rises to 21.
Web shops and their customers, in particular, benefit from the international connection via the service, as delivery according to the recipient’s choice rounds off a shopping experience abroad. No matter in which of the affiliated countries online shoppers order goods – GLS will inform them about the delivery in their native language.
Delivery according to choice
Depending on the country in question, recipients will then have various options to manage the time and location of their delivery. GLS or the network partner in the country adapts flexibly to the needs of recipients. This includes, for example, parcel delivery on a desired day, forwarding to a different address or the delivery to a selected ParcelShop.
A pan-European service
In addition to the 21 countries connected in all directions, the FlexDeliveryService has already been set up for export parcels to Greece. GLS is preparing to connect further countries.
