Shipping information

To ensure that goods arrive undamaged, they must be properly packed. Sturdy cardboard, filling material and strong adhesive tape provide good protection. If you pack your parcel correctly, the contents will not be damaged during automatic sorting and transport.
All you have to do is attach a shipping label on the parcel and your parcel is ready for shipment.

Parcel dimensions

GLS uses an automated sorting system for fast and economical delivery. Parcels must therefore meet certain conditions. A parcel may have a maximum girth (1 x L + 2 x W + 2 x H) of 300 cm and a maximum length of 200 cm, width of 80 cm and a maximum heigth of 60 cm. For shipments sent from a GLS Parcel Shop, a maximum length of 120 cm applies. In addition, a parcel may weigh a maximum of 32 kilos. GLS Netherlands does not transport goods which fall entirely under the ADR.

ADR

The ADR (Accord européen relatief au transport internationale de marchandises Dangereuses par Route) contains specific legislation and regulations for the transport of dangerous goods within the Netherlands and Europe by road. GLS Netherlands does not transport goods which fall entirely under the ADR. GLS does sometimes transport ADR related goods, such as: LQ (Limited Quantities), EQ (Excepted Quantities) and goods with a (special) exemption. European Union delivery times

GLS allows senders to send their parcels via a GLS Parcel Shop to 24 countries in the European Union. A shipment within the Benelux generally reaches its destination within 24 to 48 hours. A shipment to a more distant country reaches generally its destination within 48 to 120 hours. Through the Parcel Shop, shipping is not possible to: countries outside the EU, Ceuta, Cyprus, Gibraltar, Greece, the Channel Islands, Livigno, Malta, Melilla, Monaco, San Marino, the town of Büsingen am Hochrhein (postcode D-78266) and all European islands with the exception of Ireland and the Dutch Wadden Islands.

Shipping via a GLS Parcel Shop

Sending a parcel via a GLS Parcel Shop is very easy. First of all, the parcel must be provided with clearly legible address details. The shipping label is completed in the GLS Parcel Shop and serves at the same time as a receipt. All fields have to be filled out and the receipt haves to be signed. The label consists of three parts:

(1) Shipping label for the parcel
All requested information is filled in here. This part is stuck on the parcel (sticker). By using the barcode and the parcel number on the shipping label, the parcel can always be identified. In addition, the size class of the parcel is indicated on the shipping label.

(2) Proof of dispatch for the sender
This receipt is signed for you by an employee of the GLS Parcel Shop and serves as a receipt. It contains all important information about the parcel, such as the parcel number and the name of the GLS Parcel Shop.

(3) Mini sticker for the Parcel Shop
The GLS Parcel Shop employee keeps this sticker for his/her own administration.

Packaging tips

The packaging of a shipment should be suitable for the type of article being shipped, its weight and vulnerability. GLS provides some useful packaging tips.

1. Packing

Packing a parcel

Goods packed in a fitting cardboard box made of high quality, moisture-resistant, double-walled cardboard are generally well protected. It is especially important to protect the corners, surfaces and sides. A new box is best. A used box, when intact, is a good environmental alternative. The heavier the contents, the firmer the outer shipping packaging should be.

2. Filling up

Filling up a parcel

Fill all the empty space in the box with filling material. The goods must not be able to slide around. The filling material must be suitable for the goods to be shipped. Bubble wrap heavy and/or fragile items and (re)use polystyrene foam shapes or other filling materials that fit exactly. Make sure that there is no direct contact between the goods and the outer shipping packaging.

3. Sealing

Wrap tape around the parcel and tape it tightly on all sides. The bigger or heavier the parcel, the stronger the tape should be. A secure seal is essential for safe transport.

4. Shipping

Remove old stickers or route labels. Attach the GLS label to the largest side of the parcel. Parcels should not be bundled together but instead sent individually. Each parcel should have its own GLS label.
