Reforestation and forest protection for the climate
Reforestation, protecting biodiversity and reducing poverty: GLS has been committed to climate protection for more than ten years. GLS Germany has been providing CO2-neutral delivery of all parcels since 1 October 2019. All emissions resulting from transportation of parcels are offset via PRIMAKLIMA e.V. The non-profit organisation protects existing forests and plants new trees around the world to protect the climate. The focus is always on involving local communities and opening up new perspectives. GLS is currently supporting a VCS/CCB certified project in Indonesia for the protection of peat bog forests.
More than three billion tonnes of CO2 are released annually through the destruction of peat bog forests - especially in South East Asia. The peat bog forests in the project area were also facing clearing and land conversion. In order to obtain wood for the production of paper, large areas of conventionally operated acacia plantations were to be established. By preserving the forests of the project area and reforesting degraded forest areas, greenhouse gas emissions of 480 million tonnes in total will be avoided over a total period of 60 years.
In addition to this important function for climate protection, the project area has been designated as a key area of biodiversity by the IUCN (International Union for Conservation of Nature) due to its rich diversity of species. As a true hotspot of biodiversity, it provides a valuable habitat for numerous animal and plant species and is home to endangered Borneo orangutans, nose-monkeys and whiskered gibbons, among others.
The positive development of the local socio-economic conditions is an essential element of the project strategy. In the 34 surrounding villages in the project area, around 45,000 people live under very basic conditions, so that the additional income opportunities provided by the project make a valuable contribution to poverty reduction. 80% of the project staff come from surrounding communities. Comprehensive vocational education and training, for example in the production and commercial marketing of coconut palm sugar, pave the way to professional independence.

The compensation of the generated CO2 emissions is carried out through a certified reforestation and forest protection project (VCS/CCB standard) by PRIMAKLIMA e.V.. The emission reductions from projects that bear the VCS certificate must be real, measurable, permanent, additional, verified by independent third parties, unique, transparent and conservatively calculated. The objectives of the VCS certificate fulfil the criteria and requirements of the Kyoto Protocol.
The Climate, Community and Biodiversity (CCB) standard also certifies projects that make special contributions to the well-being of the community and biodiversity. The project in Indonesia meets the mandatory criteria of the CCB as well as the optional Gold Level criterion "extraordinarily positive contributions to the lives of local people and biodiversity.

Why does GLS support a project in another country?
When trees are planted in Germany, their CO2 binding volume is always automatically put towards to Germany’s reduction commitments under the Kyoto Protocol. Consequently, when GLS supports projects in Germany, these projects cannot be taken into account for its own climate offsetting. Otherwise, the trees would be counted twice.
Furthermore, trees grow more quickly close to the equator, which enables more CO2 to be bound sooner. The international projects also count towards climate justice. Countries located in the Global South are often impacted by the effects of climate change without the people there being responsible for it. The reforestation projects open up new sources of income and strengthen the economic power and the local people.
GLS is committed to environmental protection. This includes responsible handling of resources and the reduction of emissions.
